as of 6 june 2026, i've relicensed this site from cc0 to cc by-nc-sa 4.0. the obvious question is "why?" well… i've been thinking about doing this for a while, as i'd like people to be able to follow a trail of citation breadcrumbs back here, and recently dug up some old writing under the latter license that i wanted to post, so i decided to follow my earlier self's wishes and relicense the whole thing. the legal status of this move is somewhat uncertain; in theory it only applies to work i've produced after that date (or changes i've made to preexisting work since) but earlier stuff is still under the earlier license. if you're confused what to do, here's a handy guide:

1. if you're nice, follow the later license for everything!
2. if you're not (or just feeling contrarian), go to the internet archive to see what material i released prior to the change. then cite me anyway because you like me <3

i'm on the fence about the nc restriction; i decided it's better to keep it for now, as i can always release it later. if you have a specific commercial use for any of my work and want an exception carved out, contact me and we'll discuss it.
